⚾️ MLB Division Realignment and Expansion: My Thoughts!
MLB is only thinking about business expansion and profit. Fans aren't the Priority!
Major League Baseball is once again flirting with the idea of division realignment. Commissioner Rob Manfred recently hinted at geographic restructuring as part of a broader expansion plan. While the idea isn’t new, it’s gaining traction.
So let’s break it down: What would realignment mean for the league, the fans, and the soul of baseball? Also, you’ll get my opinion at the end of the piece.
🟢 The Positives:
Geographic Logic = Less Travel, More Rivalries. Imagine the Yankees and Mets in the same division. Or the Cubs and White Sox battling for playoff spots. Realignment could group teams by geography, reducing travel fatigue and fueling regional rivalries that fans care about.
Expansion-Friendly Structure. With cities like Nashville, Charlotte, and Portland vying for MLB teams, realignment would make it easier to integrate new franchises without bloating existing divisions.
Balanced Competition Some divisions are stacked (hello, AL East), while others feel like a minor league warm-up. A reshuffle could level the playing field and make postseason races more exciting—and fair.
TV Ratings and Revenue Boost Rivalries drive viewership. Realignment could create marquee matchups that networks love and sponsors drool over. More eyeballs, more dollars.
🔴 The Negatives:
Tradition Takes a Hit Baseball thrives on nostalgia. Breaking up historic divisions like the NL Central or AL East could alienate longtime fans who live for those legacy matchups.
Logistical Headaches Realignment isn’t just moving teams around—it’s rewriting schedules, playoff formats, and broadcast deals. That’s a lot of moving parts, and not all of them will move smoothly.
Uneven Market Impact Smaller-market teams might lose their few marquee games if rivals are shuffled elsewhere. That could hurt attendance and local engagement.
Fan Confusion: Casual fans already struggle to keep up with the current playoff format. Add a new division structure and you risk turning baseball into a Rubik’s Cube of rules.
My Take: MLB is becoming corporatized, and that’s the Problem
First off, I’m not against expansion on paper. I think having an MLB team in Nashville or Charlotte is good for the fans in those areas, as it will finally give them a professional baseball team. The issue becomes funding for brand-new “modern” MLB stadiums in those markets. There’s no chance in hell that the new owner of the expansion team or the MLB is going to pay any money towards the stadium. So that means the taxpayers will have to pick up the entire cost of the construction. Which will be in the billions of dollars. Most of the “positives” of division realignment are for the MLB owners’ bank accounts and not necessarily for the fans’ best interests. It’s very expensive for the fans to follow MLB. (I’m likely to write another piece about that problem) First, you need a cable subscription. Before I canceled my cable, my bill was nearly $200 a month for cable and internet, and guess what? I didn’t get YES Network on the Comcast cable I had. Yes, I’m a Yankees fan. (I got YouTube TV now, and I still don’t have the YES Network because of the YES Network’s very expensive carriage fees) You also need Apple TV, Peacock, ESPN, Fox, and so much more, but I digress. You might think about getting MLB.TV's streaming service. However, if you are a Yankees fan living in the NYC territory, for example, then the games will be blacked out. So that’s going to drive away potential fans from the game.
It’s all about making money for MLB and its owners. Which is why there’s going to be a lockout after next season. The owners are eager to implement a hard salary cap like the NFL has. In order to drive down players’ salaries. This expansion and realignment is another way for MLB to nickel and dime their fanbase and the taxpayers of these markets that want an expansion team.
Baseball’s charm lies in its quirks, its history, and its communities. Let’s not lose that in the shuffle.
PS: I'm trying to raise money to get a new computer. I'm currently borrowing a computer to continue working on the shows. If you can assist in any way, I would appreciate it so much. Here are the links below where you can donate. Thanks in advance!
